Does pasteurization eliminate the virus?
Yes. Specifically, according to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), FMD is progressively inactivated by temperatures above 50 degree Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit). In the U.S., the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance mandates that pasteurized milk be heated at a minimum of 145 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes or at a minimum of 161 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 seconds.
