High levels of perchlorate (above 245 parts per billion [ppb]) can temporarily affect the thyroids ability to absorb iodide from the bloodstream. However, these effects are thought to be reversible upon removal of perchlorate with no cumulative effects. According to the Perchlorate Information Bureau, a human would have to consume 14,000 ppb of perchlorate in drinking water daily to result in adverse effects.
