Does quality vary from sample to sample? Why?
The protein and oil content of soybeans can vary quite a bit. For example, over the years, we’ve seen market channel soybeans with protein contents as low as 30% (on a 13% moisture basis) and as high as 40%. Because of the variability in protein and oil content, the value of soybeans, as processed into meal and oil, can vary as much as $1.00 per bushel, depending on market prices. About half of this variability is due to weather and growing location. But the other half is due to soybean genetics. The relative ranking between varieties is fairly constant. For example, a variety that’s higher in protein will always be higher relative to other varieties, although the weather may cause the absolute level to rise or fall. We are just learning that the amino acid content can vary as well.
