Does research that is exempt from the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules require IBC review?
Yes, the University of Minnesota Board of Regents Policy requires that University faculty, staff and students using any potentially hazardous biological agents (rDNA, infectious agents and/or biologically-derived toxins) in research or teaching activities apply to the IBC. Even if rDNA activities are exempt according to Section III-F of the NIH Guidelines, the activities must be reviewed by the IBC.
