Does Resource Leveling Really Work?
I’ve recently had several inquiries regarding resource leveling. For over two decades, I have used, tested, evaluated, written about, and supported automated resource leveling – a capability that is provided by all full-featured project management software tools. My experience has continually shown that this function (automatic resource leveling) has failed to deliver usable results. Furthermore, my surveys have continually shown that this capability, although almost always a specified requirement for software selection, is almost never used in actual practice. So when I went to respond to the recent inquiries, I (surprisingly) found myself reversing my previous high regard for the resource leveling function and advising alternate approaches to allocating resources to tasks.
