Acai berries are currently being touted by marketers in all areas as THE super fruit with powers of anti-aging, disease prevention and weight loss properties. They can be eaten plain or used in beauty products in their oil form. Let’s look at whether all the hype is supported by the scientific community and research studies: 

Why are acai berries good for you? Any dark colored fruits (like grapes, blueberries, cranberries, etc) are excellent for your body because they are rich in anthocyanins and flavonoids. Both are powerful antioxidants that protect your body. Antioxidants fight free radicals (bad byproducts in your body) and slow aging and the disease process (like combat cancer and heart disease).

BUT, so far acai berries have not been formally proven to have more health benefits than just eating similar types of antioxidant-rich foods. 

Likewise, acai berries are said to help people lose weight – but this has not been confirmed either. Think of it as simply eating healthy (so eating fruit) is better than fats and sweets any day.

Acai berries are good for you – there’s no doubt about it. The question is whether they are truly superior to other similar antioxidant-rich foods. Research has yet to look into this and confirm whether acai is a superfood.
