Does the Canadian Prime Minister have the same “Executive Order” powers as the US President?
The Canadian Prime Minister, technically, has no executive power, since he is the head of the legislative branch of power. Practically, he does have some executive power, but those powers are somewhat more limited than the President’s. And the Prime Minister really only serves at the pleasure of his party’s members. The Prime Minister can: – Appoint judges, cabinet ministers, and other officials (his power exceeds the President’s in these cases, since there is no mandatory review of these appointments.) – Issue Privy Council orders Dissolving governments and requesting the formation of new ones is a power exercised by the Governor General, acting on behalf of the Queen.
