Does the city name CORPUS CHRISTI technically violate the separation of church & state ideal of the USA?”
Growing up Unitarian, I was certainly taught about the many Unitarian founders. And they did want to prevent the establishment of a national religion, hence the First Amendment’s “establishment clause”: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” This clause prevents Congress from legally preferring one religion over another. Although originally, it applied only to the federal government, in the 20th century, it was expanded to apply to states. I don’t believe the founders ever said anything about municipalities, but if you have found such a statement, please do post it. Since city names are not established by Congress, I don’t see that they would have any say in the name Corpus Christi, anyway. So I don’t think that the name of a city is a violation of the ideal, though I see where it might offend some people. Also, it is common (though hardly universal) to leave proper nouns untranslated, so I don’t see that it would be likely to get a new name unless the re
