Does the social and physical environment of a school affect the education of kids?
Absolutely it does! If the physical environment is poor with few facilities then a child may not have access it needs to develop to full potential. Eg. Enough computers for whole class. Enough books to do research etc. The physical state of the building will have a perhaps more subtle effect in that if the decor is poor and neglected it makes the environment dull , we all know what effect that can have on us if we work in these kind of conditions. If their work isn’t displayed around the school and the corridors are left blank then that’s an opportunity missed for giving the children a sense of pride and ownership. SOCIAL What is the school’s policy on bullying? If it’s just there on paper but not carried through in practice then bullied children will have their learning affected. If you look at Maslow hierarchy of needs, then unless the most basic needs are met, needs further up the hierarchy eg. learning etc. cannot take place as successfully. Is there a school council?
