It is a much more complicated situation than that. The US simply wants peace between the two factions and with the Kurds; and for the peaceful Iraqis of any of the factions the US supports all of them. We were fighting the Sunni Insurgents in the past, and they were the ones who had sided with al Qaeda (Sunni organization). But when al Qaeda kept taking out Iraqi civilians in their attacks including Sunni ones, the Sunni Insurgents turned on al Qaeda. The US military decided to help them in that fight and provided weaponry to the Sunni Insurgents for the fight. They were attacked verbally at home for doing so, but it looks like it worked. Overall there is no real Sunni Insurgency against America. There is still some attacks on Shiite individuals by Sunni Insurgents, but we really don’t fight them anymore. Now we are fighting against Shiite militias. Shiite militias have begun to feel betrayed by Nouri al Maliki, the current Prime Minister of Iraq and a Shiite himself. They feel he is t
