Yes, he always was vulnerable. Yet from what i have read from these old pre-crisis stories, it was much worse pre- than post-crisis. Back then it was almost another form of Kryptonite, now many writers take a ‘He is vulnerable to magic like everybody else and sometimes even less so’ -approach.
