You’ll find different answers to that if you look it up online.  I have tinnitus, and I have found various explanations. One is that it may be a constantly stressed muscle, possibly caused by tensing your jaw.  No one has figured out how to get that muscle to relax, although there are suggestions in a book on pressure point massage, and accupuncture might help. It didn’t help me, however.  Mine accompanied hearing loss, but the root cause was my allergies, which caused fluid in the middle ear that eventually paralyzed the little hairlike fibers in there that are supposed to vibrate to transmit sound to the brain. Once those fibers are gone, there’s no way to get your hearing back. However, some people have tinnitus without hearing loss. It doesn’t seem to be that one causes the other, but that they come from the same underlying cause.
