Does WCPSS offer year-round schools?
The Wake County Manager and the Chairman of the County Commissioners first introduced the concept of year-round schools in 1987. Two years later Kingswood Elementary opened as the first year-round, single-track program in North Carolina and the first magnet year-round in the nation. In 1992, Wilburn Elementary became the first existing Wake County School to be converted to a year-round program. Currently, there are 12 year-round schools in Wake County, including 9 elementary and 3 middle schools. There are no year-round high schools because multi-track year-round high schools on the 45-15 plan (9 weeks of classes with 3 week breaks) would be difficult to manage, offer limited programs and cost much more in personnel. On October 9, 2000 the Office of Student Assignment recommended Stough Elementary and Carroll Middle to convert to the year-round calendar.Conversion of another existing elementary school will be recommended at a later date.
