The WIC Program stands for Women, Infants and Children. It is a nutrition program that is administered by the states. The funding for this program is done in the form of block grants from the federal government.

WIC qualified items

Each state has specific requirements for what items are allowed to be purchased using the WIC program. Because it is a nutrition program the typical allowances include:

Formula – until a child reaches 12 months of age, WIC vouchers may be used for the purchase of formula;

Milk – once a child turns one year old, parents are then allowed to use the WIC vouchers to purchase milk. This may be in the form of dry milk or reconstituted milk;

Juice – while each state allows a WIC vourcher holder to purchase juice, there are some specific restrictions including amount of sugar and additives;

Cereal – each state has specific guidelines regarding cereal including in some cases what brands can be purchased. All cereals must have low sugar content;

Baby food – jar baby food also has specific restrictions under the WIC program.

WIC vouchers cannot be used to purchase any non-food items including diapers. For additional information by state, information can be obtained from the USDA website.
