Although dogs and cats have fur coats, they do get cold. Small dogs and cats should be brought in whenever possible. During cold spells all dogs and cats need extra attention. During walks, a short coated dog may enjoy the warmth of a sweater. Indoors will always be the warmest, safest spot. Dogs and cats are prone to frostbite on the paw pads, which is very painful. Outdoor pets should have a dry doghouse that is free from the wind. The floor should be a few inches off the ground and cedar shavings can help to keep him warm. Special care should be given to make sure outdoor pets have plenty of fresh water and not ice!
