If eight years have passed following the expiration date of a license and you have not been working as a registered nurse in another state, a licensee is required to pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). The NCLEX-RN is required to determine current clinical knowledge and fitness to resume the practice of professional nursing. For information on retaking the NCLEX-RN examination, please visit the Board’s Web site at www.rn.ca.gov/lic/pdf/8yr_retakeapp.pdf. If eight years has passed following the expiration date of a license and you have been working in another state; you do not have to re-take the NCLEX-RN. For information on how to renew your license, please visit the board’s Web site at www.rn.ca.gov/ren/reinstate8year.htm .
