Like the Yamaha WX series, the Akai EWIs (Electronic Wind Instruments) are based on saxophone or woodwind fingering. The EVI was based on brass type fingering. All Akai EWI models and the EVI1000 have touch sensitive keys which can take some getting used to, since just touching a key produces a note, i.e. you can’t rest your fingers on the keys like on a real woodwind instrument. To counter this Akai offered the mysterious EWI-FR finger rest. Most people get used to the touch sensitive system and end up preferring it. The Akai wind controller is pretty versatile. When using an external MIDI sound module, you can program up to 4 note chords. Each note of the chromatic scale can be setup to transmit a (1), 2, 3, or 4 note chord. So if you finger a C, perhaps a C major chord could be sent via the MIDI OUT jack.
