For the process of forging, is there a certain type of material used to hold the molten metal?
Answer Good morning Josh; The forging process hopefully doesn’t involve molten metal. Forging is hot or cold working steel or metals like a blacksmith. I think you are asking about casting, which does involve molten metal. Probably the most common casting “container” is a sand mold. This involves a damp sand, oil base binder, sawdust or meal and making a sand that will hold shape in a mold. The mold consists of two parts called a cope and drag with associated plumbing cut into the sand. I might suggest that you pick up a couple of books that could explain the sand cast process. I have a rather technical text that I have used for years called “Principles of Metal Casting” by Heine et. al. that I found on Amazon.com for about $50 to 60.00. There is another book(s) that is for the more practical approach “Metal Casting: a sand casting manual for the small foundry” Vol. 1 & 2, by Chastain. These to are available through Amazon for about $30.00 each. As to where to get alloys for casting: Y
