Forget Buddy Rich,forget Ginger Baker,John Bonham,Animal even, is Bev Bevan the greatest drummer ever?
Well, as a writer for ‘Drummer’ magazine, I have interviewed more drummers than you could shake your Bev Bevan stick at, and the perceived wisdom is the John Bonhma is the greatest rock drumer who ever lived. It is a matter of opinion, but these are people who play for a living, and they know whom they like, who influenced them, who made them want to play as youngsters, and who’s skill and technique still inspires them and – it’s Bonzo – every time the subject comes up. But – if you think BB is the greatest, then he is – it’s all opinions, yours no more or less valid than theirs – except to say I have never hear BB mentioned as an influence by anyone.
