This reflects their alignment. The darker colors (red, brown) mean that the players has killed lots of people. The lighter colors (blue, usually) mean that the person doesn’t kill people often. A gold name means they have not killed recently at all, they are also immune from being attacked by other players with a sword. To get a gold name just do not kill anyone for some time. This represents 100 AP, and it will rise by itself. To see how much AP you have say “showap” in the chat window at the bottom of your Graal client.
