Going on Christian camp and need a Bible, would an NIV Bible be appropriate?

The difference between a NIV bible and NRSV (The two biggies) is not really that big. There are reasons people choose one over the other, but you really shouldn’t worry yourself with it. Unless they specified which version there will be people there will King James, New King James, NIV, NRSV, The Message, the Living Bible… The list goes on. I use NRSV but when I direct and counsel camp I see plenty of NIV’s out there. If you want to go inexpensive that is ok too. The more expensive bibles say the same thing but they have added stories and explanations of what each verse is trying to say. If you are going to christian camp you will have counselors that will do the expensive part for you.

I have an NIV Thinline Bible with Renaissance Leather (which feels really cool) and I love it! I’m somewhat new to learning about the Word of God and my pastor even has one and he’s a lot more experienced than I am! So it’s a good Bible to have that helps to understand the Bible easier. From a Christian Book Outlet, it was $44.95 but that was only because of the awesome leather. There’s NIV books anywhere from $9.99 up to around $49.99 ranging in different sizes, covers, text, etc. Overall, I greatly recommend the NIV Bible, it’s easy to understand. **I also just found out not long ago that Jesus Christ taught out of a King James Version Bible, I didn’t know that (pretty cool huh?) But they are a lot harder to understand!

Well….it depends on what kind of “Christian camp” this is, and on what kind of Christian YOU are. The NIV is the most popular English Bible – so that’s a pretty safe bet unless you are Roman Catholic or unless the camp is Roman Catholic. In either of those cases, you will want a New American Bible. The NIV is at about 8th grade reading level http://www.bibleselector.com/reading_lev… So if you are a poor reader or not yet in 8th grade, you might want to get the Contemporary English Version instead. It is the best of the 5th-8th grade Bibles and can be purchased very cheaply at www.bibles.com or Amazon.

It depends on what you want to do with the Bible. The NIV is a version that is written in plain English rather than the old style of the King James version. The concepts are the same. It is only the wording that is different. I personally find the NIV to be easier to read and in my case more meaningful. I have three Bibles. The King James version, an NIV and a life application study Bible. The life application Bible is printed in NIV language but has a separate section on each page that gives the breakdown of how the various passages affects us personally. It is my preferred read.
