Greek Language – Where was it spoken in Roman Times?

Greek was the “language of culture” at that time. It was spoken even in Rome by educated people. It was also spoken all over the mediteranean and beyond- the Greeks had colonies long before the Romans placed two bricks together- Marseilles, Syracuse, Cadiz, Alexandria, were all Greek towns. All of present day Turkey, Lebanon, Syria and a good portion of Egypt spoke Greek on an everyday basis. In your Celtic lands Greek would have been used at least from Lyon southwards, and perfectly understandable in all coastal cities of Spain, France, Italy, North Africa. Greeks regularily traded with Britain (tin mostly) so quite a few people would understanf Greek there too. time frame?
