Guy Fawkes: Why do we burn the effigy of the most honest man to ever walk into parliament?
Guy Fawkes was a Catholic, he wanted to murder the Protestant King and bring Catholicism back to England, Scotland and Wales. At that time religion was the politics of its day in this country and loyalty to the Catholic Church was seen as loyalty to a foreign cause, hence he was a traitor. Guy Fawkes was a terrorist and this is why his effigy used to be burnt on a bonfire on 5th November. We no longer refer to old Guy these days as it is deemed politically incorrect to celebrate the putting to death of a Catholic.
Guy Fawkes was in fact what we would call today a terrorist. He tried to blow up the houses of Parliament in so doing murdering the Government and the opposition, which admittedly was even worse than the lot we have got now. That is why his effigy is burnt every year. It is only in recent times through books and films that he has become a folk hero.
