while she broke all our hearts doing it, had several very valid reasons to end Dumbledore’s life. Some of them are structural, and have to do with how creating and heightening plot action, some of them have to do with character, and some have to do with development. Here are some of the reasons she did this (speaking as a writer myself, and as someone with a degree in English Lit). CAUTION!!! There could be spoiler material here. Since you’ve skimmed it I don’t know what you know and don’t know!!! • If Dumbledore is around, Harry isn’t on his own. Harry HAS to be on his own to finish what he has to do–he had to bring together his own strengths. If Dumbledore does it, Harry remains a child. That harry does this by building on love, firendship and trust is essential. Notice WHO destroys the horcruxes! • Because we anticipate plot twists, we anticipate Dumbledore’s return–and JK Rowling keeps that alive for us, with the glimpses of that bright blue eye in the fragment of mirror.
