Has anyone ever given their dog an antihistamine, like Benadryl, for allergies?

When I was flying my 22-lb dog from L.A. to New York, my vet recommended Benadryl as a safer alternative to drugging him to sleep during the flight. I decided against it simply because I couldn’t monitor him in the cargo hold, but since the vet recommended it, I would assume it’s relatively safe. However, I think it’s important to keep in mind that it WILL most likely make your dog sleepy. So if your dog seems extra sluggish after you dose her, remember it’s a general side effect (antihistamines are an active ingredient in over the counter sleep aids). Since I haven’t used them, I’m not sure about dosage amounts, but I would certainly start off with a smaller dose first just to see how your dog reacts to the med, and make incremental increases if the earlier dose doesn’t seem to work. Hope this helps.
