Yes, I had my nuchal scan at 12 weeks. It is just like a normal ultrasound, except the sonographer measures body parts and makes sure all the bits are in the right spots etc. They measure the fold of skin behind the babies neck, and depending what measurement it is, gives you a risk factor of having a downs syndrome baby, combined with bloodwork from you done at the same time. The measurement ideally should be anything up to 3mm thick. Alot of aspects are taken into account, like your age, body weight etc. You are then given a risk factor for downs and trisomy 18. If the risk is high, then you will be offered further testing ie. CVS or amnio. I was so worried when I had the scan – I am 37, and my chances are higher for a downs baby given my age. My results came back at 1:3463, a very low risk indeed. My risk, according to my age should have been around 1:347. My risk was that of a much younger woman! So, given the statistics, no invasive tests for me. I wish you luck – oh, and you get
