Beyond the pillars of Hercules refers to the strait of Gibraltar. Additionally though pairs of pillars were found in many places around the world. Alexander the Great mentioned finding them in Persia and Palestine and India. The Egyptians who originally told the story to Plato’s ancestor said that Atlantis lay far to the East of Egypt. No. It rather depends on what you mean by “Atlantis.” If you mean Atlantis as described by Plato, then maybe. The island of Santorini, north of Crete, was destroyed in a volcanic explosion about 1500 BCE, and fits the description to a minor extent, although it never held a technologically superior civilization to those of its time. But Plato placed his “continent” further north of that location.
