Has gambling been legalized in St. Lucia?
(Opinion By Keith Millar) I keep asking myself this question every time I receive a text message asking me to spend money in order to win something. The latest from my telephone company is for me to text a four letter word for a chance to win a phone I don’t need. Another telephone company is asking customers around the Caribbean to play a game for a chance to win some cash. Now I expect those companies to argue that what they are doing is nothing more than marketing and promoting their service but consider this. The regular cost to send a text message is roughly around 25 cents or less. When a customer is asked to spend $1.00 to send a text in order to win something (say a $1000.00 telephone), the cost of this chance to win is $0.75cents. This means that after the company has received 1333 texts, it would have covered the cost of the so called prize and be making exorbitant profits on the item.
