Has Google ever been hacked?
In December of 2009, Google suspected that an attack against the company’s corporate infrastructure, specifically, gmail was underway. On January 2010, Google publicly reported on the company’s official blog that the attack was primarily aimed at accessing gmail accounts of human rights activists in China and Europe.
Only two gmail accounts were breached, and access was limited to account creation dates and other details including email subject headings. While the investigation is still on-going, Google’s investigation uncovered that several dozen corporations across a myriad of different sectors were also targeted.
Google subsequently notified these companies and began working with the relevant US authorities to investigate the attack. This attack promoted Google to change the company’s policy toward China and alter the policy of blocking certain websites the Chinese government found objectionable.
