Has Hanson ever had a video retired on Total Request Live (TRL)?
Yes. During the summer of 2000, “If Only” was retired after being at #1 for 27 days (not in a row). Initally, after the video debuted in the U.S. on MTV in May of 2000 it was on the TRL charts for about a week, coming in at the lower half of the top 10 most of the time. It then dropped off and that was supposedly it. Shortly thereafter, massive internet fan support moved it back onto the charts and eventually all the way to #1, to the shock of many people who believed that the NSync and Backstreet Boys videos that were topping the TRL charts at the time were unbeatable. Hanson actually managed to shut out NSync and BSB more times than not and had a very respectable run as one of the top three videos during the summer months. Unfortunately, on the day “If Only” was retired it clocked in at #2 behind Britney Spears’ “Lucky.” Some of the earlier Hanson videos did well, especially “MMMBop,” but TRL did not have the “retirement” clause for videos back then.
