Heritage Trust Program / Preserves: What is the Heritage Trust Program / Where are Heritage Preserves?

The SCDNR Heritage Trust Program was created in 1976, the first such program in the nation. Created to preserve those natural features and cultural remains which are fast disappearing as the state grows, the program’s purpose is to inventory, evaluate and protect the elements considered the most outstanding representatives of our state heritage. Since 1986 almost 44,000 acres have been permanently protected as Heritage Preserves. There are about 50 Heritage Preserves across the state. For further information about the Program, heritage preserves, donations or conservation easements, write Heritage Trust Program, SCDNR, PO Box 167, Columbia, SC 29202, or call (803) 734-3893.
