How are Miniature Horses different than ponies?
At a maximum height of 38″, they are smaller than ponies. And their conformation is that of a horse, only in miniature. Sometimes miniature horses are born deformed. Why? There is a dwarf gene in the miniature horse breed. Even with the most careful breeding, you can get one. I have had one dwarf. After that I did not do the same breeding (same mare with same stallion) and haven’t had another one. What happens to dwarf miniature horses? They are often very much loved because they are special and adorable, however, they frequently suffer from disabilities resulting from their dwarfism and generally have a shorter lifespan than a healthy miniature horse. Why do you think miniature horses are well suited to perform as guides for blind people? The main advantage is their long lifespan compared to a dog.
