Trying to get your first job can be very stressful, even when you know that the industry you have chosen is hiring. From the news and the internet, you know that oil rig companies and offshore drilling companies are hiring. They are hiring people to build new oil rigs. They are hiring people to operate those oil rigs. And yet, when you send off your CV, you get no replies. The fact is, the drilling rig jobs are there. In June 2008, Transocean, one of the world’s largest offshore drilling companies, was awarded a 5-year contract for their drillship Deepwater Pathfinder worth over $1 billion. This comes out to $652,000 per day. Because Deepwater Pathfinder is already under contract today, the new contract will not start until March 2010.
