How are pre-cancerous cells (CIN) treated?
There are two treatment options for CIN; they either destroy or remove the abnormal cells. Cryotherapy is useful for low grade CIN and involves freeezing the cells repeatedly untill all the abnormal cells have been destroyed. It is 95% effective. Laser ablation involves a laser beam burning away the abnormal cells. Loop excision involves removing the area of abnormal cells using a very thin wire loop electrode. The benefit is that the cervical tissue removed can be sent away for analysis to ensure the whole abnormal area of cells has been removed Cone biopsy is a minor operation to surgically remove the abnormal area of cells.
