The CSS Pension Plan operates two separate and distinct portfolios. These portfolios are invested in accordance with a detailed investment policy approved (and subject to a detailed annual review) by the Board of Directors. The non-retired lives portfolio which deals with the funds of members who have not commenced a pension is invested in a widely diversified portfolio of high quality Canadian bonds, Canadian equities, US equities, Non-North American equities, and a small and declining number of mortgages - essentially a "balanced fund". The performance of this portfolio over a one year and a multi-year time frame has been very good. The retired lives portfolio is invested solely in high quality domestic bonds - a low risk approach to ensure the assets can meet the pension commitments made to retired members.
