How are the UCSD Libraries being impacted by budget cuts?

A. Earlier this year, the Libraries were asked by the Senior Vice Chancellor to prepare a document describing how we would take a possible $6 million budget cut in 2011-12, a cut that would be nothing less than devastating to the Libraries and our ability to support the academic mission. Instead, we outlined how we would absorb a $3 million budget cut in 2011-12, on top of significant cuts absorbed by the Libraries in fiscal years 2008-09 and 2009-10. Over the last few years, the Libraries have absorbed cuts of nearly $5 million (or approximately 16% of our operations and collections budget). In addition to these cuts, the Libraries were assessed approximately $1 million for employee furloughs last year. Given that the Libraries depend on state funding for nearly 85% of their budget, these funding reductions have given us no option but to rethink the resources and services the Libraries deliver to the campus community and other patrons.
