How are tribes in a position to become major players in United States energy?
When tribes were designated to reservations, the federal government put them on what they believed to be the least economically viable land. However, tribes are finding now that they are on major sources of energy producing resources. Tribal lands in the United States hold nearly a quarter of all onshore oil and gas in the United States. Indian lands contain 33 percent of low sulfur coal in the West.
