How are tropical storms named?
There are six rotating lists of tropical storm names. Each year a different list is used. These lists were created from names that were sent to the World Meteorological Organization by its member nations. Storm names are listed in alphabetical order. The first tropical storm of the season will have a name beginning with an “A,” the second tropical storm will have a name beginning with “B,” and so on. During even-numbered years, the “A” name is male the “B” name is female and it rotates throughout the alphabet. During odd-numbered years, the “A” name is female, the “B” name is male and so on. Sometimes a name will be taken off of the list, or retired, if the storm caused a lot of damage.
