It appears that Myra Bradwell was the first woman attorney in America. She graduated from law school in 1869, but was refused admission to the Illinois Bar on the basis of her gender. America’s first known woman judge was Esther McQuigg Morris, who was on the bench in Wyoming for only 8 ½ months in 1869 before being removed because she was a woman. In 1979 the National Association of Women Judges was formed by approximately 100 women attorneys.
