How big is the spring plague locust outbreak expected to be?

0

As a result of improved seasonal conditions, the locust plague this spring is predicted to be the worst outbreak in at least 30 years. The first locusts are expected to hatch in mid to late August in the State’s north and far west. Large numbers of locusts are anticipated in many parts of the north-west, central west, far west and Riverina. Depending on conditions such as temperature and moisture levels, the most intense activity is forecast for the Central and Riverina areas in September and October. The 2004/2005 locust outbreak, one of the largest in recent times, led to widespread damage right across the country, particularly in the Central West and Riverina areas of NSW. A concerted campaign between farmers and the NSW Government saved more than $1 billion worth of crops and pastures.
