Assemble your materials (see list below). Start by making a frame for your pit. Take 2 of the 36″ boards and 2 of the 48″ ones, and make a rectangle. Screw the pieces of wood together at the corners to make one frame. Repeat to make a second frame, overlapping ends in the same direction so that the two frames have the same dimensions. Measure the location where you will be building your playing area. From the back of one pitching area to the back of the other, you’ll need 48 feet of length (but this includes 2 feet of clear space behind each box). The width will be 6 feet. Center each box from side to side at the ends of the playing area. Their fronts should be 36 feet apart. The longer side of the boxes should be parallel to the length of the playing area. Mark the outside perimeter of each box on the grass with flour, lime, spray paint, etc. so you will know where to dig. Then lift the boxes and set them aside. Dig into the grass.
