How can an American male traveler safely see sights in Karachi, Pakistan?
Karachi is a great and vibrant city, so enjoy your trip! Situation isn’t as bad as media reflects but in times like now, especially after Raymond Davis episode, foreigners do need to take a lot of care. Here’s what I will suggest, 1. Go around with a trusted friend who knows the area. I won’t suggest a professional guide since he could easily be connected to shoddy organizations. Security wise, going alone is a big NO. Your friend will also help you to buy stuff cheap otherwise vendors will try to charge you hefty amounts. 2. Wear traditional Pakistani clothing like Shalwar Qameez (tunic and loose trouser) and people will most probably not notice that you are a foreigner (that’s if you are a white American,) they will take you as Pathan – someone from Northern Pakistan. 3. Do not discuss controversial topics with strangers like • CIA, • War on terror and Pakistan’s role in it • American Supremacy • Anything even remotely blasphemous or rude about religion Islam, any prophet or God.
