E-business solutions are like any other investment and normal investment criteria can be used – such as Net Present Value (NPV) and Return on Investments (ROI). The big trouble comes trying to understand what the longer term costs are. All to often investment proposals show wonderful ROI figures largely because they have not fully taken into account future costs, risks or been optimistic over benefits. If you don’t fully appreciate the risks and costs you are unlikely to be getting the best from your investment. Unfortunately, obtaining insight into the risks and costs requires a lot of experience and a good understanding of those issues that drive cost and risk.
