How can I be a very good film director someday?
Buy a cheap camcorder and try shooting/editing short films. You’ll make plenty of mistakes, learn all about shooting for coverage while editing, and start to understand why certain shots are used and why other shots don’t work. As for the technical side of it, you can buy books detailing the art of lighting and camerawork. A good director knows the jobs of everyone on the set inside and out, so experiment with everything. This is a pretty cliche answer too, but good ole Tarantino learned filmmaking from watching movies all day while working at a video store. Culturally, the average person knows a lot more about storytelling and film than they might expect. Also – I’m a film grad myself. A film degree in hollywood means squat. It’s all about what you know and what you can do. I wouldn’t be so quick to drop tens of thousands of dollars on classes when all the references and materials you need are readily available.
