How can I conveniently provide a file to be downloaded by a student to form a basis for homework that the student will later upload for grading?

First, click on File and upload the file you want to provide to your students. Second, Turn editing on and then in the appropriate Add an activity… box, select Assignment. In the large description box, embed a clickable (i.e. downloadable) file reference there. Then highlight (i.e. drag the cursor over) the reference and click on the chain-link icon of the description box editor. This brings up a box asking for a URL, Click on Browse, and you’ll see a display of your FILES area. Click on the line that contains the just-uploaded file, and you’ll see the URL gets filled in. The Target box is what shows when a cursor hovers above the link. Press send to close the pop-up window and now you have created a URL that references the file to be downloaded by the student. Finish specifying the assignment, being sure to choose Upload a Single File as the assignment type.
