I experimented with this for a while, but found I was impeding traffic… The key to great gas mileage is to go with the lay of the land, Gentle on the gas, and allow the car to slow going up hill. Stay on the gas going downhill, but gently. Let off way before you get to an intersection, and again be gentle pulling away. I found I could improve my real gas mileage by 2-3 mpg on my 80 mile commute, which amounted to about 1/4 to 1/2 gallon fuel savings per day, about 1 1/4 – 2 1/2 gallons per week. In other words, I saved less than $10 per week and drove everyone else on the road crazy. 😉 For real, the biggest factor in improving mileage for real is tire pressure. Pump it up a little, say 35-38 psi. But not too much, you don’t want to be dangerous. High octane gas is a myth, at least for fuel efficiency. And heck, even if it did work it would have to work really well to make up for the difference in price. And it won’t, so don’t bother. Fuel additives don’t work, and can actually harm
