How can I get rid of cigarette smoke smell from my sofa?

I did this with a leather sleeper sofa once. I don’t think I’d try it with a fabric one; there is just too much fiber to trap the smell. First, I left it outside in the hot summer sun for several days to air out (sunlight also kills odors). Then I pulled out all the stuffing from the cushions, sprayed them with Febreeze, let it dry in the sun, repeated the Febreeze bath twice more, and restuffed the cushions. Even still, there is a faint residual odor. You may never be able to get enough of the smell out of it, and if anyone in your household has allergies or asthma, this sofa may affect their breathing.
