How can i help my granddaughter who has selective mutism?
Push the doctors to give her an official diagnosis so you can get help. There are many non-profits that will be able to give you free help or direct you in the right direction. Many kids with SM are very gifted. In the meantime see if there is one child that she feels comfortable with and invite them over for play dates. Ask that child’s parent if they could be a “whisper buddy” for your granddaughter. A “whisper buddy” is someone that she can talk to that can talk to other people on her behalf. Print out information and give it to the caregivers to help educate them while you are seeking help for her.
