How can I improve the sound control performance of a partition?
Sound travels through a partition through several paths. One path is through the structure and the other path is through the air within the structure (e.g. wall cavities). For optimal performance both paths should be treated. The airborne path is treated with fiber glass batts that completely fill the partition cavity. The structural path is treated with the use of discontinuous constructions (resilient channels, double wall construction) and/or additional mass in the form of extra layers of drywall. Finally, any gaps, cracks, voids or penetrations should be sealed and made as airtight as possible. The partition is a system and will function only as well as the weakest component will allow.
