Well, you’re in a pickle. If he is not on LinkedIn (i.e. you wish to invite him to create a profile) you must find that email out. But the fact that his email is hard for you to acquire suggests to me that you no longer speak to him, so a simple phone call is out of the question. Something tells me that perhaps your colleague is on the LinkedIn network and you are unable to add him because he might require users to know his current email in order to add him. If that is the case you still have a few options to sidetrack that. If you are connected to someone who is also connected to him, you may ask them to send an Introduction in order for you to connect. Otherwise, if you were colleagues and you both have this previous job listed in your employment details then you can form a link to him through that, without needing his email address.
